Nov 7-14 NORTHERN NSW (Q)
GIBRALTAR RANGE AND WASHPOOL NAT. PARKS. Visit these northern NSW parks for the waratah season. There will be a number of options: car camp and do day walks, or do all or part of the World Heritage Walk. This track walk is 60kms long with side trips of an extra 40km and takes five or six days for the total trip. There is a bit of everything, eucalypt forest, rainforest, heathlands, wildflowers, granite tors, views, rivers, swimming pools, waterfalls. Careful navigation required but good walking. If conditions permit extra time can be spent exploring the top of Washpool Creek and its tributaries. This will be more challenging and not suitable for prospectives. All off trail and rocky walking and exploration. I have another trip into Georges River and/or into the Five Day Creek area. The Georges River will be largely creek walking and rainforest and exploratory (latest information from early 80s; the creek may have been impacted by fires and flooding and will consult with NPWS well before trip. Nov 17-24 NEW ENGLAND (Q)
I plan to explore the Georges River and/or 5day Creek area. The Georges River has a granite section, described as beautiful walking in the old guidebook (a new Kowmung Gorge?) It is rainforest walking so good campsites might be difficult to find and stoves only. I plan on going down the river to make the river walking easier and there are a few waterfalls to get around (which might be easier from the top?). I hope, from the topo that there will a good campsite above the granite section where we can basecamp and enjoy the creek for a day or two. There is a superb interpretive trail at the top of 5 Day Creek but some parts of the river and walls downstream are a bit gnarly (a few suprises said the ranger) and a more lesurely option might be suitable (and available as a walk into Sunday Creek and potentially through to Thora depending on drivers and vehicles. There are some backup options if weather is not favourable, including exploring the upstream parts of the Styx River on the plateau, or some of the other gorges to the west which are less committing but still good granite walking with lots of history. DISTANCE: MEDIUM. TRIP GRADE: MEDIUM/EXPLORATORY MAPS: Hyatts Flat. TRANSPORT: $Lots
