Walks Program

Nov 1-6 GIBRALTAR RANGE-WASHPOOL NP NORTHERN NSW + OXLEY WILD RIVERS NP + NEW ENGLAND NP (Q). The Gibraltar Washpool World Heritage walk is all on track, 45K or up to 100K with side trips. The side trips can be done separately if an issue for timing. Fuel stoves only. Wildflowers should be good. Allow at least one day to get to and from the start of the walk (Mulligans flat). After this walk I would like to do some exploration for future trips in the area: I plan to do at least one rainforest walk, either 5 Day Creek or George’s Creek/River which are closer to Armidale, and the Styx River Gorge which will require water proofed packs. These walks will be all off track with navigation a key issue for some access routes. The two rainforest rivers are regarded as attractive walking with good rainforest and possible multi day options but I would look to one or two nights for this trip to sample access and the rivers quality. There have been fires in the area and falling trees might still be an issue. The Styx is regarded highly in the old UNE guidebook and lends itself to a multi day trip upstream from its junction with the Chandler with exit up Oaky Creek or the ridge depending on time and water levels. I am still investigating access as NPWS staff seem not to have been there. The most direct route appears to cross private property and I would need to identify owner. Alternative access is available from public roads on the other side but limits options for exits and likely requires a car swap to go upstream on the Chandler. If water levels are high there are other gorges worth exploring. I will need to fill in a registration form for Gibraltar Washpool so I need an EOI sooner rather than later to place mark the trip. There is no issue with a subsequent cancellation but NPWS might limit visitor numbers because of covid so adding numbers is likely to be harder. An EOI will be needed for the RF and Styx walks for registration and particularly for planning if a car swap is needed. For Gibraltar Washpool, NPWS webpage has info pages and downloadable maps. For the second trip the old UNE guidebook is the best source of info. DISTANCE: MEDIUM. TRIP GRADE: MEDIUM/EXPLORATORY MAPS: JEOGLA, BIG HILL, HYATTS FLAT, FIVE DAY CREEK. TRANSPORT: $191 +
