Jan 28-30 (FRI-SUN) KANANGRA BOYD NP KOWMUNG RIVER - MORONG DEEP (Q)
Morong Creek camping area, Morong Hill, Gap Camp Gully, Kowmung River (Morong Deep), Hanrahans Creek campsite, Megalith Ridge, Morong Hill, Morong Creek camp area.This walk takes in about 2/3rds of the classic upper Kowmung River Gorge walk. Steep descent down to the river. Generally a leisurely pace that includes a lot of rock hopping, scrambling over and around polished granite boulders with several compulsory swims, the longest being about 50 m. You must be competent to swim/dog paddle with your well waterproofed pack. Sublime pools, waterfalls with a few low jumps. This is one of the best gorge walks in the country. Experienced and fit walkers only. DISTANCE: MEDIUM. Hornsby Station, bus to Hornsby Heights, proceed down unnamed ridge to Benowie Track, Berowra Creek. Packraft downstream past Crosslands Reserve to Berowra Waters (coffee shop). Feb 7 (Mon) MOONEY MOONEY CREEK (q) - Packrafting
Wondabyne Station, Pindar Cave Track, off track route down ridge to Mooney Mooney Creek. Paddle upstream with incoming tide to Piles Creek Junction and proceed up Piles Creek to exit near the Hawkesbury Track at Phil Houghton Bridge. Walk out via tracks and fire trails to Langford Drive, Kariong. Catch 34 Bus to Gosford Station. Lots of interesting mangroves to paddle past all within Brisbane Waters NP. Wyong Station, Tuggerawong, Doyalson, Munmorah, Budgewoi, The Entrance, Tuggerah Station. Maximum 6 cyclists. A scenic ride with some ascents, shared paths, quiet roads, bike lanes. Feb 16-22 PRECIPITOUS BLUFF - TASMANIA (Q)
Quarry, Pigsty Ponds, Leaning Tea Tree, Low Camp, PB Plateau Camp, Prion Beach, Granite Beach, South Cape Rivulet, Cockle Creek. 4 days ridge walking, then 3 days beach walking. Green Gully, Megalong Valley. Tree planting and maintenance. Working in a new area, it is a level site. All new volunteers have to log on to the NWPS VIP site (just the once) and complete the registration. The cabins are not available any more, as the renovations have been completed. Feb 21 - Mar 2 FRANKLIN - GORDON WILD RIVERS NP FRENCHMANS CAP, TASMANIA (Q)
Expressions of interest are sought for this walk to the iconic Frenchmans Cap (1,446 m) in a World Heritage Area. Bus to/from Hobart to the start of the walk. Lake Vera Hut first night, then one day's walk to Lake Tahune Hut near Frenchmans Cap for 2 nights. Then walking off track to camp near Clytemnestra (1,271 m) for 2-3 nights - return the same way. Possible day walk to the Franklin River (Irenabyss). There are only 2 huts on this walk so a good tent is needed in case of extreme weather and possible full huts. There are platforms near the huts. We will be out for 9 nights, 10 days and plans may vary depending upon the weather. Sublime scenery and fantastic panoramic views from Frenchmans. Bring lightweight day pack. Stoves only. Only fit and experienced walkers. Leader has not been to Clytemnestra before. Limit 8. Apr 15-19 SOUTHERN BLUE MOUNTAINS (Q)
A five day walk over Easter. Friday: Drive to the junction of the Colong Stock Route and the Mt Armour Fire Trail, then walk four kms to camp for three nights at Colong Swamp. Saturday (day pack): Mt Yuburra, Chiddy Obelisk, Coach and Horses gap. Sunday (day pack):Tonalli Gap Fire Trail, Colong Gap, Mootik Walls. Monday: Climb Mt Colong to camp on top near the spring. Tuesday: Descend Mt Colong via the basalt scree spur, Morton Head, Mt Armour FT. Spectacular views over a variety of Blue Mountains landscapes. Half on fire trails, half off-track with some patches of thick scrub and scrambling on fragile rock. Party limit of 8. DISTANCE: MEDIUM. TRIP GRADE: MEDIUM/HARD MAPS: Bindook, Yerranderie. Jun27-Jul6 WEST MACDONNELL RANGES NP (NT)
Expressions of interest are sought for this walk in the West Macs NP. Ochre Pits, Inarlanga Gorge, Alice Valley, Giles Springs, Chewings Range, Mt Giles, Canyon of Defiance, Portals Canyon; return via Alice Valley and Ochre Pits. Stunning vistas and exploring canyons. High camp on range before day walk to Mt Giles. Base camp at Defiance and Portals Canyons for 2-3 days. Mostly off track in hard, rocky, spinifex country so only fit and experienced walkers. Good boots needed. Stoves. Take lightweight day pack. Nearby Ormiston Gorge had c. 150 points mid Nov 21 so water should not be a problem. An extra c. 5 litres of water needs to be carried for range top camp. Max 10. Jul28-Aug9 TJORITJA - WEST MACDONNELLS (Q)
Two off-track walks in the West MacDonnells (Tjoritja). There may be slight changes to the dates.Walk 1, eight days: From Ormiston Gorge, cross Ormiston Pound and climb Corner Peak for excellent views. Continue on to the Canyon of Defiance and base camp there for three to four nights. Ascend all slot canyon reaches of Defiance, and explore Felicitous Gorge and Rockfall Gorge. Ascend to the top of the Chewings Range via Pats Canyon and camp at the Dog Leg with superb sunset and sunrise views. Descend to Giles Yard Spring and cross the Alice Valley to the Ochre Pits. Walk 2, five days: Most of this area is new to the leader. From Stuart Pass, head east to base camp by a pleasant pool for three nights to explore the surrounding peaks (including Iloata / Mt Conway 1135 m) and gorges. Continue north and east to Standley Chasm. Steep and crumbly slopes, sharp, broken rock, spinifex, some short rock climbs. Experienced walkers with a good head for heights only. Party limit of eight.
